چکیده

'Advanced database applications', such as CAD/CAM, CASE, large AI applications or image and voice processing, place demands on transaction management which differ substantially from those of traditional database applications. In particular, there is a need to support 'enriched' data models (which include, for example, complex objects or version and configuration management), 'synergistic' cooperative work, and applicationor user-supported consistency. This paper deals with a subset of these problems. It develops a methodology for implementing semantics-based concurrency control on the basis of ordinary locking. More specifically, it will be shown how conventional locking can step by step be improved and refined to finally reach our initial goal, namely a comprehensive support of synergistic cooperative work by the exploitation of application-specific semantics. In addition to the 'conventional' binding of locks to transactions we consider the binding of locks to objects (object related) and subjects (subject related locks). Object related locks can define persistent and adaptable access restrictions on objects. This permits, among others, the modeling of different types of version models (time versions, version graphs) as well as library (standard) objects. Subject related locks are bound to subjects (user, application, etc.) and can be used among others to supervise or direct the transfer of objects between transactions.

Don't be a Pessimist: Use Snapshot based Concurrency Control for XML

As native XML database systems (e.g., [3, 7, 8]) get increasingly popular, fine-granularity concurrency control becomes imperative in order to allow different clients to concurrently access the same documents. Existing concurrency control approaches for XML are mainly based on locking [2, 3, 4, 6, 5]. However, the experiments of [5] have shown that the locking overhead, especially for read oper...

Optimistic Concurrency Control in a Distributed NameNode Architecture for Hadoop Distributed File System

The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is the storage layer for Apache Hadoop ecosystem, persisting large data sets across multiple machines. However, the overall storage capacity is limited since the metadata is stored in-memory on a single server, called the NameNode. The heap size of the NameNode restricts the number of data files and addressable blocks persisted in the file system. The H...

ARIES/KVL: A Key-Value Locking Method for Concurrency Control of Multiaction Transactions Operating on B-Tree Indexes

This paper presents a method, called ARIES/ KVL (Algorithm for Recovery and Isolation Exploiting Semantics using Key-Value Locking), for concurrency control in B-tree indexes. A transaction may perform any number of nonindex and index operations, including range scans. ARIES/KVL guarantees serializability and it supports very high concurrency during tree traversals, structure modifications, and...

Managing Concurrent Activities in Collaborative Environments

An approach to support activities in collaborative databases is proposed. This approach merges exible transaction models from collaborative environments and semantics based cor-rectness criteria. A model is rst presented which incorporates the notion of collaboration in the context of transactions. A protocol is then developed based on this model for eecient management of collaborative activiti...

Exploiting Semantics and Speculation for Improving the Performance of Read-only Transactions

A read-only transaction (ROT) does not modify any data. Efforts are being made in the literature to improve the performance of ROTs without correctness and data currency issues. The widely used twophase locking protocol (2PL) processes the transactions without any correctness and data currency issues. However, the performance of 2PL deteriorates with data contention. Snapshot isolation (SI)-bas...
